What To Do After a Fatty Liver (MASLD) Diagnosis
Simple Guide from someone who has gone through it.
1. Understand the Diagnosis
New name: MASLD = Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
What it means: You have fat in your liver. It’s common and often reversible.
Ask your doctor:
How much fat is in my liver?
Do I have inflammation or scarring (fibrosis)?
Do I need more tests (like a FibroScan or MRI)?
2. Change Your Diet
Eat more: Veggies, fruits, beans, whole grains, fish, lean meats, olive oil.
Eat less: Sugar, soda, white bread, fast food, alcohol.
Try the Mediterranean diet — it's great for liver and heart health.
3. Start Moving
Goal: Walk or move 30 minutes a day.
Start small — even 10 minutes at a time helps.
Add strength training twice a week if you can.
4. Lose a Little Weight (If Overweight)
Even 5–10% weight loss can reduce liver fat.
No crash diets. Go slow and steady.
5. Track These Numbers
Ask your doctor to monitor:
ALT / AST (liver enzymes)
Blood sugar / A1c
Cholesterol and triglycerides
Blood pressure
Weight and waist size
6. Ask About Other Health Conditions
Do I have prediabetes or diabetes?
High cholesterol or high blood pressure?
Sleep apnea? PCOS?
Treating these helps your liver too.
7. Consider These Add-ons (Ask First)
Black coffee (3–4 cups a day may help the liver)
Vitamin E (if no diabetes — check with your doctor)
Omega-3s or fiber supplements (if diet lacks it)
8. Lower Stress and Sleep Well
Chronic stress and poor sleep can worsen liver health.
Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep.
Try deep breathing, meditation, or walking outdoors.
9. Follow Up
Check in every 3–6 months with your doctor.
Ask: Is my liver improving?
Get repeat blood tests or scans if needed.
